I know – they don’t look like nailheads,do they?
The term is used to describe beads with a flat back, having stringing holes run though them from side to side.
They are used whenever you want a bead that’s flat on the back and will sit flat on whatever you are making – whether it is costume jewelry, appliqué,
card or  scrap-booking. You can use them for clothing or costumes – just don’t sew them on anything you plan to machine wash, because they are made of glass.
In this particular case the backs of the beads are actually hollowed out which – if you were using a lot of them, would decrease the weight of the piece minimally.
These attractive 6 millimeter diameter round red-orange beads are extremely well
made, and date back to the early to mid
1900’s.
